The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has announced Saturday, October 22, 2016 as the next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The semiannual event aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing prescription drugs, while also educating people nationwide about the potential for abuse of medications.
Many people are not aware that medication left in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. This initiative has inspired thousands of people to turn in millions of unused, expired and unwanted drugs, aiding in reducing the threat of prescription drug abuse.
Many of us are also unaware of how to properly dispose of our unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away. Along with bringing awareness to the dangers of prescription drug abuse, this event provides an outlet for safe disposal.
The event will take place from 10:00AM-2:00PM in every state and sites will be set up throughout communities so local residents can participate. To learn more about the event and to locate a collection site near you, visit www.DEA.gov.
